This year, the Great Plains Institute is thrilled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our founding as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the energy system to benefit the economy and environment. Looking back at our impact, I’m energized by the progress we’ve made and filled with a sense of possibility.

GPI has always had a “we can do this,” opportunity-oriented approach. I know from our experience that working together across political divides and geographic boundaries and finding synergies across social sectors to craft positive, durable solutions is not only essential but achievable.

Indeed, just a month ago, after years of building and aligning the interests of a remarkably broad bipartisan coalition, we collectively achieved the passage of one of the most significant pieces of energy and environmental legislation in recent memory–the FUTURE Act.

This federal legislation, supported by members of Congress from across the political spectrum, is proof that even in our often-divisive environment, it’s possible to make progress that is a win-win-win for the economy, energy security, and the environment.

Still, there is so much more to do, and time is of the essence. I see GPI’s 20th anniversary celebration as a chance to reflect and as a challenge to all of us to dramatically increase our impact in the next two decades.

Thankfully, we have incredible partners who share that goal and believe in GPI’s potential: The McKnight Foundation and Great River Energy have issued a $50,000 challenge match. We are proud that those who share our passion have already helped us raise $32,000 of the match!

By giving today, you can double your impact and help us not only meet our match… your investment enables continued transformation of the energy system in ways that yield economic and environmental benefits.

What strikes me most as I reflect on how GPI–and the world–has changed over the years is that our mission and core approach of building agreement where none was thought possible is as important as ever. This distinguishing feature of our approach will be essential as we tackle the complex, intertwined issues of energy and the environment in the next 20 years and beyond.

As we celebrate our 20th year, I invite you to join with us in a conversation as we share stories and insights from our history and our ambitions for the future, and engage with us on how we can make a positive impact together toward better energy for a better world. We’d love to hear from you!

We can solve our energy and environmental challenges, but we will only succeed if we work together.

I look forward to connecting with you this coming year as we mark this milestone and look to the future!
