Kristen Peterson joined the Great Plains Institute in 2017 as the Sustainable Communities Program Assistant. Her interest in sustainability stems from a lifelong love of swimming, hiking, and exploring natural spaces. Kristen earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management, where she enjoyed learning about the many factors that influence environmental decisions.

While studying in Montpellier, France, the city’s excellent transit system piqued Kristen’s interest in sustainable communities.  This led her to spend over a year working at Metro Transit in the Twin Cities, where she led employee Green Teams, worked on environmental review for new light rail projects, and implemented a new waste management system to improve recycling rates.

Away from the office, Kristen likes to spend her time rock climbing, cooking, asking questions, travelling, and swimming in as many different lakes and streams as she can find.
